Celebrating Ramadan around the world
2 September 2008
“The month of Ramadan emphasises the virtues of generosity, sacrifice and sympathy”
DFID Minister Shahid Malik
To mark Ramadan, throughout September DFID employees from around the world will be describing their own experiences of the holiest month in the Islamic calendar.
In the film below, Lanny Jauhari from DFID Indonesia explains what Ramadan means to her and how her faith informs her work helping Indonesia's poorest people. You can also click on the Google Map, below right, to find out more about DFID projects in Indonesia.
Films, photos and audio clips from other countries and continents will follow on the DFID website over the next four weeks.

More about Indonesia, its development challenges and what DFID is doing to help:
Poverty
- Half of all Indonesians (117 million people) live below $2 per day and are very vulnerable to falling further into poverty.
- Fourteen million Indonesians live below $1 a day.
Disasters
- In recent years Indonesia has been struck by an unprecedented series of natural disasters: the Aceh tsunami of December 2004, the Nias earthquake of March 2005, and the Yogyakarta and Central Java earthquake of May 2006.
- DFID contributed £38 million to the Multi-Donor Fund for Aceh and Nias, enabling the swift rebuilding of 3,000 houses, 2,200 kilometres of road and 1,100 bridges, and providing over 14 million days of employment.
- DFID is giving £5 million to help the Indonesian Government keep communities safer when disaster strikes in the future.
Climate change and the environment
- Indonesia contains a large part of the world’s untapped resources of oil, gas and minerals. The country's huge tropical forests and peatlands could have a substantial impact, either positive or negative, on worldwide efforts to combat climate change.
- To ensure that Indonesia's forests are better managed, and to integrate climate change mitigation and adaptation across all its work, DFID plans to provide up to £15 million to the Indonesian Government.
HIV/AIDS
- In recent years, DFID funding has resulted in significant increases in condom use, the treatment of sexually transmitted infections and the provision of clean needles and syringes, and led to stronger government action to address discrimination against people living with HIV and AIDS.
