Press Release
21 January 2008
UK and India partnership to achieve poverty goals globally
UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today
signed up to a partnership to fight global poverty. Signed at the UK-India
Summit in Delhi, this partnership commits both governments to a series of joint
actions to improve progress on the Millennium Development Goals, both in India
and worldwide.
The India and the UK agreed to work together in third countries where they both
have a development interest. They will collaborate on improving the ability of
the international system to reduce poverty and on international policies that
affect the poor, such as trade and climate change. This is in addition to DFID’s
development programme in India, for which Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced
an aid package of £825 million
yesterday.
About the partnership, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: "The UK and India both
signed up to the Call to Action in response to the global emergency of world
poverty. This partnership takes us a step further, and demonstrates how deeply
committed our two countries are to eliminating poverty, both in India and across
the world."
The Secretary of State for International Development, Douglas Alexander, said:
"By working together with India, using our combined knowledge, experience and
resources, we stand a far greater chance of meeting our MDG commitments. This
partnership is testament to the depth and resilience of our relationship with
India. Together, I believe we can have a powerful impact on global poverty."
