Land and reducing poverty: Launch of DFID policy paper

July 19 2007

Land: Better access and secure rights for poor people

“Land policies are fundamental to sustainable growth” - Sir Nicholas Stern

If poor people have access and secure rights to land, this can help boost economic growth, tackle inequality and reduce poverty.

This is the central message of DFID’s policy paper on Land, which was launched by DFID Minister Gareth Thomas on 19th July 2007.

What is DFID doing about Land?

Access to land for poor people is often unfair, and their rights insecure. And where environmental degradation, power relations and population movement increase pressure on scarce land resources, the results can be explosive.

This policy paper provides an update on what DFID is doing to:

  • connect poor people to economic opportunities; and
  • improve governance to help poor men and women gain secure access to land and property.

“With secure access to land I can plant cash crops and get income to send my children to school” - Ruslan, community leader in Tipulu, Indonesia
