Secretary of State hosts launch of new EU strategy paper
24 June 2008
Secretary of State for International Development, Douglas Alexander, last night
hosted the launch of a new Institutional Strategy Paper (ISP) laying out how the
UK will coordinate its development agenda with the EU over the next three
years.
Currently, 21% of DFID’s budget, some £964 million, is channelled through the EU.
The Government is keen to ensure that this money continues to generate effective
outcomes for developing countries, and that the EU continues to provide global
leadership on challenges such as poverty, climate change and trade.
The launch comes at the end of a three month public consultation process which
saw contributions from key stakeholders, including a number of NGOs and think
tanks.
The ISP sets out key objectives for enhancing Europe’s role in global
development, including:
- putting the eradication of poverty at the heart of Europe’s aid
agenda;
- placing stronger emphasis on “policy coherence”, i.e. ensuring that
work in related areas such as security, climate change or trade support
and reinforce our poverty eradication policy.
