Hilary Benn announces emergency aid for Indonesia
27 May 2006
Today International Development Secretary, Hilary Benn has made up to £3 million available to the UN and its agencies to meet urgent needs they identify in response to the earthquake.
Hilary Benn said:
"Tragically, Indonesia has suffered another disaster. The money which I am making available from the UK will help the UN and relief agencies meet the immediate needs of those affected. As always, Britain stands ready to do whatever is necessary to help."
Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott said:
"I have been in close contact all day with Hilary Benn and other colleagues, and the whole Government, our Embassy team in Jakarta, and staff on the ground are working together to provide whatever support we can to Indonesia at this difficult time."
It is expected that any appeal from the UN will be to help provide emergency relief supplies such as tents, blankets and medical kits. DFID also stands ready to supply emergency items after a needs assessment has been carried out by a joint UN and NGO team.
The assessment team is expected to travel to the affected area first thing on Sunday morning.
The UK’s £3 million is from unspent funds given to the UN following the Asian tsunami in 2004. The redirection of these funds is in recognition of the greater immediate need following the earthquake and will not affect our support for tsunami survivors or long-term reconstruction in Indonesia.
