UK Indonesia quake pledge rises to £5 million

2 June 2006

UK Development Secretary, Hilary Benn, has today made a further £1 million available to British NGOs working to help those affected by the earthquake on the island of Java.

The £1 million will be given to relief agencies for work over the next three months, and brings the total UK Government pledge to £5 million.

Mr Benn said:

"The first week after a disaster is often the most crucial time for survivors who desperately need food, medicine and shelter. In the first two days, we made £4 million available to the UN and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent to help with their relief operations, and this additional £1 million to British NGOs will help them set up mobile clinics and distribute household goods to those affected."

"The UK will continue to work with the Government of Indonesia to help meet immediate needs and plan for longer term reconstruction."

Of the £1 million of funding, initial commitments that have been made are:

  • £400,000 to External linkSave the Children Fund for shelter kits which include corrugated iron sheets, tools and cash in support of affected livelihoods;
  • £400,000 to External linkOxfam for relief items including hygiene kits which include soap and toothpaste as well as plastic sheets to help build temporary homes; and
  • a decision on the balance is still outstanding and will be made in the next few days.
