  • A DFID chartered flight left from East Midlands Airport carrying Oxfam aid (393 packages of water filtration equipment) for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
  • A DFID chartered flight carrying Christian Aid relief equipment ( 3 vehicles, pumps, a generator and emergency food rations ) left from Billund Airport, Denmark, for Medan, Indonesia.

  • Secretary of State Hilary Benn visits Amapara and Batticoala in Sri Lanka. Whilst in Batticoala, he meets families affected by the disaster, visits a centre for displaced people and has meetings with local government officials, MPs, UN agencies and other donors. He also visits crews from HMS Chatham and RFA Diligence who are helping with the relief effort. Hilary Benn visits Sri Lanka.

  • DFID approves £1 million for the International Organisation for Migration for logistics, transport, storage and distribution of relief items throughout the tsunami affected region.

  • DFID approves £484,163 for HelpAge International for health, water, food, non-food items for 30,000 people in India and 10,000 people in Sri Lanka.

  • DFID chartered flight from Cologne takes more tents to the region.
  • RAF flights carry UN relief goods from Brindisi depot (Italy) over the weekend.External LinkMoD Operation Garron.

  • The Secretary of State for International Development, Hilary Benn, travels from Indonesia to Sri Lanka as part of his visit to the areas affected by the tsunami.
  • International Development Minister, Gareth Thomas, attended the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council, in Brussels,  which was attended by Development, Foreign Affairs and Health ministers of the European Union member states.
  • Total DFID spending committed to date is £26.4 Million.

  • DFID approves £3.5 Million for World Food Programme:
    • £2 Million to provide food aid to Indonesia
    • £0.5 Million for Sri Lanka 
    • £1 Million for Special Operations (Logistics)

  • DFID chartered flight leaves from Brindisi Airport (Italy) carrying 40 tonnes of World Vision aid (tarpaulins, blankets, cooksets, jerrycans and water systems) to Colombo, Sri Lanka.
  • A DFID funded DC8 aircraft left for Maldives carrying over 40 tonnes of water (donated by Scottish Water and Strathmore Water) and colllapsible plastic jerry cans (donated by Scottish Water). It is due to arrive on Wednesday morning.

A series of earthquakes hit southern Asia on Sunday at around 0800 hrs local time, setting off a tsunami that has reaches Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India, and Thailand.

  • DFID staff hear within an hour of earthquake hitting and mobilise emergency unit.
  • DFID immediately provided team members for two UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination Teams.
  • DFID despatches own assessment team to Sri Lanka.
