- A DFID flight carrying 5 Land Rovers left East Midlands Airport for Jakarta, Indonesia, to supply the Office of the UN Security Coordinator (UNSECOORD) activities in the region.

- The Secretary of State, Hilary Benn, today announced a UK commitment of £40 million to the United Nations Flash Appeal for urgent humanitarian assistance in the region. The appeal - which will cover the period to the end of June 2005 - will help meet immediate needs for shelter, food, health, water and sanitation, as well as economic recovery and rebuilding damaged infrastructure
- The HIC (Humanitarian Information Centre), which is a mobile office containing maps, computers, vehicles and electrical generating equipment for OCHA (UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs) has arrived in Banda Aceh

Secretary of State Hilary Benn visits Amapara and Batticoala in Sri Lanka. Whilst in Batticoala, he meets families affected by the disaster, visits a centre for displaced people and has meetings with local government officials, MPs, UN agencies and other donors. He also visits crews from HMS Chatham and RFA Diligence who are helping with the relief effort. Hilary Benn visits Sri Lanka.
DFID approves £1 million for the International Organisation for Migration for logistics, transport, storage and distribution of relief items throughout the tsunami affected region.
DFID approves £484,163 for HelpAge International for health, water, food, non-food items for 30,000 people in India and 10,000 people in Sri Lanka.

- The Secretary of State for International Development, Hilary Benn, travels from Indonesia to Sri Lanka as part of his visit to the areas affected by the tsunami.
- International Development Minister, Gareth Thomas, attended the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council, in Brussels, which was attended by Development, Foreign Affairs and Health ministers of the European Union member states.

- International Development Secretary, Hilary Benn witnesses the devastation in Banda Aceh. Hilary Benn interviewed on the Today programme.

- An IL 76 aircraft chartered by the DFID left from Nottingham East Midlands Airport bound for Kuala Lumpur, from where shipment will be arranged to Banda Aceh and Medan. The plane carries a mobile humanitarian centre for use by
OCHA (United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs) in Banda Aceh. In addition, one million water purification tablets and sufficient tents to provide shelter for at least 1,000 people, were sent by the DFID.

- DC8 aircraft arrives in the Maldives carrying 40 tonnes of water and collapsible plastic jerry cans.
- DFID approves £4,000,000 for UNICEF for water and sanitation activities in Indonesia, the Maldives, India and Sri Lanka.
- Christian Aid was one of the first British agencies to submit a proposal to DFID and to transfer the money to India.

- DFID offers to assist the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) in transporting any items purchased from the Tsunami Earthquake Appeal to affected people in Asia.
- The Royal Fleet Auxiliary and the frigate HMS Chatham have been directed into the disaster zone, and are expected to arrive on 4th January. - DFID announces an additional £35 million for the victims of the earthquake, bringing the total to £50 million. Among the first allocations so far is £2 million to the International Federation of the Red Cross.

A series of earthquakes hit southern Asia on Sunday at around 0800 hrs local time, setting off a tsunami that has reaches Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India, and Thailand.
- DFID staff hear within an hour of earthquake hitting and mobilise emergency unit.
- DFID immediately provided team members for two UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination Teams.
- DFID despatches own assessment team to Sri Lanka.
