DFID creates more opportunity for people to participate in global issues and building support for development
DFID is committed to investing in raising the levels of awareness about global issues among the UK population. If individuals really understand just how connected we are, here in the UK, to other people around the world, they are more likely to make use of their skills and knowledge to shape the world for the better in the future. And with everyone ‘on board’, tackling global problems collectively will be much easier.
Nothing shapes attitudes and behaviour as powerfully as direct experience. Experience that remains with you for life and can change the way you think and feel about the world, and the people you share it with. That’s why DFID’s 2006 White Paper announced new activity to generate more opportunity for people to volunteer, to play an active role in the fight against poverty. We committed DFID to:
- Expand opportunities for young people and Diaspora communities to volunteer in developing countries
- Support Internship Programmes for young people to work with NGOs.
DFID would like to seek views on how to develop these initiatives, to create the best possible opportunity to involve more people directly in global issues and development. The paper "DFID and Volunteering" outlines the three areas and asks specific questions and makes specific statements to prompt your thoughts and ideas.
Please respond in less than 1000 words and send your ideas to volunteering@dfid.gov.uk no later than 31 May 2007.
