UK to provide £1 million in humanitarian aid to Burma
10 October 2007
DFID will provide £1 million of new funding to help ease the humanitarian
situation in Burma. This will be in addition to the £8 million in aid the UK
gives every year.
Some of the new money will be used to assist urban children who have been made
more vulnerable or homeless by recent events. This may include some children who
were looked after by the monks or lived in the monasteries which have been
raided or closed over the last few weeks.
DFID funds could be used to provide food, improve access to clean water and
healthcare. They are likely to be administered by local and international
non-governmental organisations (NGOs)
and UN agencies working inside Burma.
Details are currently being finalised and more information will be available on
the website shortly.
