Water and sanitation - Sudan
The humanitarian effort in Sudan is co-ordinated by the UN using a
common
humanitarian fund (CHF) to support relief efforts by agencies and partner
NGOs. DFID’s contribution to this fund is £40 million for 2007, which amongst
other relief supports water and sanitation to conflict affected people.
Water resource management remains a critical issue in Darfur. DFID Sudan has
been supporting research by the NGO
Tearfund
examining the impact of both conflict and relief on the environment in Darfur.
The final phase of this is to assess water scarcity in internally displaced
persons (IDP) camps in Darfur, which will help determine how water resources are
managed, and what support will be required for leading partners.
In addition to work being done through the CHF DFID supports NGOs to implement water and sanitation projects in Darfur.
DFID also supports a Basic Services Fund (water and sanitation, health and education), which will give approximately £4 million over two years and help provide access for around 400,000 people.
Sudan is a member country of the
Nile
Basin Initiative, which is supported by DFID Headquarters. This is a
critical regional issue bringing the riparian countries together with the aim of
agreeing how best to use and share the Nile’s water resources.
