Nigeria country profile
DFID increased its direct expenditure on water and sanitation in Nigeria from
£2.4 million in 2004-2005 to £3.5 million in 2005-06 and will spend about £4
million directly this financial year (2007), in addition to expenditure through
health, education and governance programmes.

Examples of DFID funded projects
- Water and Environmental Sanitation Programme, 2003-08:
working with the Federal Government of Nigeria and
UNICEF the project
aims to provide 11,000 school children and 280 teachers with access to
and use of improved sanitation, 120,000 people with an increase in
reliability of water supply in 4 towns and 22,000 people with resorted
access to water supply in 4 towns by the end of the project. Approved
commitment £15 million.
- Urban and Small Town Water and Sanitation Jigawa Programme,
2004-06: worked with
WELL to improve the delivery of water supply
and sanitation services to the urban and peri-urban poor through
strengthening institutions and provisioning new and/or rehabilitated
infrastructure in 5 urban towns in Jigawa State. Approved commitment
£1,520,000.
- Girls’ Education Project (GEP), 2004-07: implemented by
UNICEF,
provides water supplies and toilets in schools across northern Nigeria. Project allocates 25% of funding for water and sanitation. As well as
enabling girls to attend school (rather than fetching water), GEP will significantly improve community access to safe water in some of the poorest
areas of NW and NE Nigeria, where access to clean water is lowest. Approved
commitment £26 million.
- State
and Local Government Programme (SLGP), 2001-07: working on a small scale with Kano and
Jigawa state governments to improve the planning and management of water
supplies. Approved commitment £28,371,000.
