There are still more than 33 million people living with HIV globally – there is still no cure in sight.

Over 30 million of those affected live in developing countries. Great progress has been made as a result of global efforts over recent years, including lower HIV and AIDS prevalence in some countries, more access to HIV and AIDS treatment and marked increases in resources. But the epidemic continues to outstrip our efforts.

HIV and AIDS in-depth

The HIV/AIDS epidemic remains a huge threat to global health and prosperity. Halting the spread of the disease in developing countries, and providing life-saving care to the millions in those countries living with HIV and AIDS, is one of DFID's fundamental goals. Without decisive and sustained action against the disease in the developing world, the scale of the human tragedy will increase, and economic and social progress will be held back.
