| Two years on from the UK Presidency of the G8
Following Gleneagles, the UK Government devised a ‘Gleneagles Implementation
Plan for Africa’ with a series of UK-identified international milestones to be
met each month tracking delivery of the commitments made at Gleneagles.
Monthly
updates for the period from September 2005 to
June 2006, and August 2006 to July 2007 were produced.
Ministerial Statements by Hilary Benn in
2006 and Douglas Alexander (19
kb) in 2007 show that significant progress has been made.
G8 countries, including the UK, continue to work with other donors and
developing country governments to make progress against G8 Commitments to
Africa. The UK’s commitment to Africa and to the promises made at Gleneagles is
evident in its £1.25 billion spend in Africa, and its continued work to address
poverty in Africa through its country
offices and work with
multilateral organisations.
Reporting on a monthly basis has been useful in the years immediately
following Gleneagles. Now, two years on the G8 Gleneagles commitments are very
much a part of the UK’s support to Africa and beyond, and also a key part of our
discussions with other donors. It is envisaged that in future annual reports
will be made to parliament.
The commitments made at the G8 Summit at Gleneagles on Africa and Development
in July 2005 can be found on the
G8 website.
