Gleneagles: Monitoring the Commitments
G8 countries, including the UK, continue to work with other donors and
developing country governments to make progress against and monitor
G8
Commitments to Africa.
The UK has published a number of reports monitoring progress. These include:
- CFA-Gleneagles report
(392 kb) -A report on UK action on the
Commission for Africa Report’s recommendations and Gleneagles commitments in March 2006;
- G8 Gleneagles: One Year On
(1.4MB) - highlighting progress by the international community against the Gleneagles targets;
- G8 Gleneagles: Two years on;
- Parliamentary Statements by Hilary Benn in 2006 and Douglas Alexander in 2007
(19 kb) based on monthly updates (Sept 2005- July 2007) showing that significant progress had been made against UK identified international milestones.
At the international level, the UK has provided support to:
- the
Africa Progress Panel, an independent panel of experts set up in June 2006 to maintain pressure for the implementation of commitments, and to keep Africa high on the international agenda;
- the
Africa Partnership Forum, which brings together African countries, regional and international organisations and the continent’s major donors twice a year. The Forum reviews progress against commitments that African countries and Africa’s development partners have made to address the continent’s development needs and agree next steps;
- the
African Monitor, launched in May 2006 as a network of African civil society groups aiming to track progress at grassroots level of commitments made in Africa.
