What we buy, where we shop, where we go on holiday...

1. Do you think it's important to take steps to fight climate change?

Absolutely - climate change will have devastating implications both in this country and around the world
Of course - we've only got one planet, we have to take care of it
Yes because so many people will be affected... just look at the flooding
I think so, I've cut down on using plastic bags

2. You see adverts for environmental and development charities. Which are you most likely to donate to?

Those that support poorer people in developing countries
Those that help to protect the environment
Probably both - because both are important issues that deserve more attention and support
Probably neither, but it depends on my mood and who's collecting!

3. When that special time arrives for a diamond ring, I think...

The bigger, the better, dependent on budget
I'd prefer a family heirloom.....or failing that, one from an antique shop
I'd definitely check the diamond certificate to see if the diamonds are conflict free
I steer clear of diamonds because of the impact diamond mining has on the environment

4. A friend is cooking dinner for you and the main course is fish - are you most likely to ask them

Where the fish is from because you are concerned about CO2 emissions / carbon footprint
Where the fish is from so you can do your bit to help developing countries benefit from trade
Where the fish is from because of both of the above reasons
For the recipe

5. When you see a cheap pair of jeans what issues come to mind?

What a bargain!
Cheap clothes mean jobs for poor people, though I'd like to know that no child labour was involved
The jeans really wouldn't last for long – which can't be good for the environment
I don't believe that it is possible to make and distribute a pair of jeans for £10 and still be environmentally and socially sound

6. What tea or coffee do you buy?

My favourite brand
A fairly traded brand – so I know the farmer got a fair price
An organic brand - so I know no chemical pesticides were used
One which is both fair-trade and organic

7. What do you think about produce
that's organic?

It's a marketing gimmick
I'm not bothered, I just want to know whether farmers from developing countries are getting a fair price for their produce
It's good for the environment because no pesticides are used
It's not always the best thing to buy because paying for the inspection to get the organic logo can be too expensive for small producers

8. A typical dinner that I make for friends and family might include...

Fresh vegetables from around the world
Vegetables from my organic box
2 for 1 offer vegetables and a ready meal
Some local vegetables and some fairly traded fruit from developing countries

9. You see an article about a farming community in Africa, which has started selling foods in the UK, you...

Ignore it – I only buy from local farmers
Find the link online and circulate it to my friends
Read it with interest and remember it when I am doing my supermarket shop
Start to read it but get as far as paragraph three and lose interest

10. When you look at the labelling on a food product, what is the first thing you look for?

Nutritional value, sell by date, what's in it
Where the food was grown
Fairtrade labelling
I look at the brand name – I'm generally aware of the company's ethical credentials
