Guyana
DFID's overarching goal in the Caribbean is to assist the region to achieve
sustainable reductions in poverty in line with the Millennium Development Goals.
This effort will operate within and support the framework of poverty reduction
and growth promotion policies and instruments embodied in the treaties and
communiqués of the Conference of Heads of Government of
CARICOM
together with the policy frameworks provided by the CARICOM Secretariat.
The Guyana programme has a strong public sector reform theme, pursued across
several key sectors: Water, Education, Governance and Social Cohesion all of
which feature strongly in the Government of Guyana's Poverty Reduction Strategy
Paper (PRSP). This is supported by efforts to promote political stability and
improved security, working with the Government of Guyana, civil society, other
UK Departments and International partners.
DFID Guyana is also engaged in initiatives to promote social cohesion,
improved governance and security, and where appropriate address wider judicial
and institutional system issues. This work is done in close collaboration with
International Partners, Civil Society, Government and other UK Departments to
ensure an effective and harmonised approach to our work in country.
