Jordan

In Jordan we are now working with the Government of Jordan on an ambitious public sector reform programme.  We have built closer relationships with other donors in the area and also continued our involvement in the sensitive area of issues of domestic violence, which the Government and civil society are jointly addressing.  The project has had high-profile support, and has drawn interest from other countries in the region.

The Jordanian Family Protection Project, funded by DFID,won the United Nations Prize in the field of human rights in December 2003.  This prize is awarded every five years for outstanding contributions to the promotion and protection of human rights.

The project is a groundbreaking initiative both in Jordanian society and internationally because of its holistic and rights-based approach to reducing all forms of abuse and family violence.  This is gaining considerable interest from neighbouring Arab states and Islamic countries and has created a model for leading in partnership with social justice.
