Supporting humanitarian work in Iraq
The number of Iraqis fleeing their homes continues to rise and is of serious
concern. Many people are living with extended families and the pressure on
essential services is now becoming critical.
The displacement of people both within and beyond Iraq’s borders is a direct
result of sectarian violence. The UK is supporting the Iraqi Government’s
national reconciliation programme in a bid to stop the violence for good.
In the meantime, there is an urgent need to address the humanitarian
situation.
DFID has provided £10 million since January 2007, and over £125 million since
2003, to support internally displaced Iraqis and refugees in the region. The new
funding will help humanitarian agencies, including the
UNHCR, to provide
emergency relief (including medical and water supplies), for displaced people in
Iraq and neighbouring countries such as Syria and Jordan.
We are also supporting the establishment of a UN coordination office in Amman
to help coordinate the response effort and get more reliable information about
the situation in Iraq and the region.
