Supporting civil society in Iraq

The existence of a strong independent media and a vocal civil society is of crucial importance in allowing the Iraqi people to hold their elected officials to account, both nationally and locally. Iraq has a growing civil society with more than 2,500 registered NGOs. Over 250 newspapers and magazines have been launched since 2003. Going forward, we are looking at various ways to support civil society in Iraq.

Since 2003 DFID has supported Iraqi civil society to do the following:

  • Play an important role in the January 2005 elections by providing voter education seminars to over 300,000 people in some of the hardest to reach areas of Iraq
  • Provide election coverage training for Iraqi journalists and political awareness discussion groups for women
  • Organise constitutional awareness workshops for young female students to help with their understanding of the constitution and enabling mobile teams to visit remote rural communities to explain the referendum
  • Set up a number of independent TV and radio stations
