Pakistan
Pakistan is located at the geographical crossroads of south
and central Asia – bordering Afghanistan, Iran, India, China
and the Arabian Sea. Nearly a quarter of its population of 160
million lives in poverty, and one child in 10 dies before his/her
fifth birthday. Growing levels of insecurity and conflict are also
serious problems.
Progress has been made in recent years, with DFID support helping to
save the lives of 200,000 children and preventing another 800,000
from becoming malnourished. During 2008-11, we will be doubling what
we give to Pakistan - to a total of $480 million - making it our
second largest aid programme worldwide.
