Ma Jinfang's Story

Our work in China has helped increase the number of girls enrolled in schools by 20% for four of the poorest counties in Gansu Province, Western China.

DFID has supported school construction, teacher training and student scholarships for 15,000 children.

Ma Jinfang is one of the children who receives a scholarship to cover her school fees.

She was chosen to meet Prime Minister Tony Blair when he visited Beijing and she later wrote him a letter.

"Thanks to your help to my school and my classmates we can sit in classrooms full of sunshine."

"The girls in our village used to help their parents on the farm. They could not go to school and envied those pupils at the school. Since the start of the project they can go to school and study with those boys together." wrote Jinfang.
