Empowering women and promoting gender equality
- In the Democratic Republic of Congo, our support over the last year has helped more than 12,000 victims of sexual violence. Our work with the Humanitarian Pooled Fund means that mobile clinics can reach victims within 72 hours.
Reducing child mortality
- In Sudan, our support of the UN Work Plan means that over 9 million children were vaccinated against polio in 2007. Over 5 million children received vital Vitamin A supplements.
Encouraging trade and reducing debt
- Debt cancellation and aid increases have helped 20 million more African children into school between 2000 and 2004.
- Over the last year, our assistance to the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund has helped more than 80,000 Afghans establish or expand small businesses.
Achieving universal primary education
- Our contribution to the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund means that 5.4 million Afghan children are now gaining an education, over a third of them girls. This is up from an estimated 1 million children, almost all boys, in school in 2001.
Combating HIV & AIDS, Malaria and other diseases
- In Zambia we have helped to provide 130,000 people with life-saving anti-retroviral treatment - up from just 3000 in 2003.
- In Ethiopia, we have supported the distribution of 18.2 million insecticide-treated bed nets, which has led to a 26% reduction in the number of new malaria cases.
- In India, our support of the national TB programme has treated 6.3 million patients and saved 1.1 million lives since 1997.
Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger
- In Ethiopia, our support of the Productive Safety Net Programme has helped up to 7 million people. This means that people can eat more or better quality food and have access to health and education facilities. New classrooms, roads, wells and clinics have been built.
Improving maternal health
- In Nepal, DFID projects have helped to halve maternal mortality over the last 10 years, from 539 to 281 deaths per 100,000 live births.
Tackling climate change and improving water and sanitation
- DFID has helped over 7 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa gain access to water and sanitation over the last four years.
- Following the tsunami in Indonesia, DFID’s assistance helped clear debris from agricultural land, enabling approximately 1,400 households to return to farming.
