Biography: Sue Owen

Sue Owen, Acting Permanent Secretary, Department for International DevelopmentSue Owen began her career as lecturer in economics at Cardiff University combined with research at the LSE Centre for Labour Economics.

Sue joined the Civil Service in 1989, working in several posts at HM Treasury including macro forecasting, the labour market and Europe.

In 1998 she worked on family policy at the Number 10 Policy Unit and over the following 3 years was Foreign and Commonwealth Office economic counsellor at the British Embassy in Washington DC. She returned to the Treasury as Director of the five tests assessment of UK membership of the Euro; this post included management of the national debt and representing the UK on the EU Economic and Finance Committee. After a brief spell as Director of Operations at the Treasury, Sue joined the Department for International Development (DFID) in April 2006 as Director General for Corporate Performance.

Sue is married to Professor Martin Albrow and has one son, Thomas, and three stepsons.
