Africa Partnership Forum

The UK has helped strengthen the Africa Partnership Forum (APF), tasked at the G8 Summit, Gleneagles in 2005 to monitor progress, including helping to establish and fund a Support Unit based in the OECD in Paris. The Forum brings together African countries, regional and international organisations and the continent’s major donors twice a year, to review progress and agree next steps.

The sixth Meeting of the Africa Partnership Forum took place in Maputo, Mozambique on 4-5 May 2006. The Forum reviewed progress on HIV/AIDS, infrastructure and agriculture and identified priority next steps. It did not prove possible to construct a single Joint Action Plan (as agreed at the fifth APF meeting in London in October 2005) that could meet the different expectations of all members across the full range of issues. Instead, the Forum agreed a monitoring framework; this includes a detailed progress report covering issues such as governance, peace and security, human development, and sustainability. The first progress report which was submitted at the October APF in Moscow focused on the three topics discussed in Mozambique.

The seventh meeting of the Africa Partnership Forum (APF) took place in Moscow on 26-27 October 2006. The agenda for the meeting focused on:

  • Progress reports on Infrastructure, HIV/AIDS and Agriculture
  • G8 Summit Outcomes (St Petersburg)
  • African Action Plan
  • Energy Poverty
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Market Access
  • Resources for Development in Africa

The eighth APF meeting will be hosted by Germany in Berlin 22-23 May 2007. The agenda is likely to cover four topics: climate change, gender, investment and peace and security.
