Selection: Many positions may be restricted to nationals of member states though this will usually be indicated from the outset.

Other entry requirements within these organisations can vary but they maintain very high standards in terms of educational background and professional experience.  These can typically include:

  • A Masters degree or equivalent
  • A significant number of years of relevant and specialised experience
  • Some international experience: It is also useful to have lived, worked or studied internationally - some professional experience in a developing country is definitely an asset
  • A knowledge of other languages:  The UN has six official languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, English, Russian and Spanish. The official working languages are English and French. Knowledge of another language maybe required for certain positions.
  • Mobility: A willingness to living abroad, away from family and relatives, sometimes in fragile and low security environments.
  • The applicant should be able to adapt to an international multicultural environment
