More and more people are looking for job satisfaction: the feeling that what they do is worthwhile, and makes a positive difference to people’s lives. At DFID, we offer a diverse range of job opportunities in areas ranging from communications to social development, united by a single goal – to tackle poverty and improve the lives of people in developing countries. What could be more worthwhile than that?
As well as job satisfaction, we offer a dynamic, professional working environment, a healthy work-life balance and competitive salaries. DFID is an equal opportunities employer, welcoming applications from all parts of the community.
The DFID People Strategy 2005-2008 will give you more information about our commitment to providing excellent management and leadership, supporting all staff to realise their potential, creating a safe healthy workplace and developing efficient, effective people processes.
DFID is committed to supporting all staff to realise their potential and achieve a healthy work-life balance. These are some of the benefits we offer.
DFID encourages flexible working to meet the needs of all employees. Under current UK employment law, all employees have a right to apply for flexible working. We will look at a range of options, including reduced hours, compressed hours and remote working. Employees may also apply for discretionary leave of up to three years, for example to care for children or elderly relatives.
Meeting our ambitious development targets means improving our performance and our productivity. We are therefore committed to maximising the potential of all our staff, by providing a range of learning and development opportunities that reflect the needs of each individual in DFID.
When you join DFID, you’ll be taken through a comprehensive induction process designed to help you do your job effectively as quickly as possible, and to identify your individual learning needs. As your career develops, you’ll be able to choose from a wide range of options including traditional training courses, conferences and seminars, e-learning, coaching, mentoring and job shadowing.
For many people, the opportunity to work overseas is one of their main reasons for joining DFID. We offer a range of benefits and support for staff going to work overseas for four months or more, including (where appropriate) a hardship allowance and passages back to the UK. Allowances are also offered for partners and children.
Your Civil Service pension is an important part of your salary and reward package. DFID will make a contribution of between 17.1 and 25.5 per cent of your salary to your pension fund. You will also have the option to make additional contributions or pay into a money purchase top-up arrangement. Your exact pension scheme arrangements will depend on your employment status and the date you joined the Civil Service.
