Preparing for an assessment centre

If you are invited to an assessment centre, a bit of preparation beforehand may help you perform to the best of your abilities on the day.

Look back over the job and person specification in the vacancy information and think about how your specific skills, knowledge and competencies match the vacancy requirements. Next, reread your application to remind yourself of your achievements, knowledge and skills. Try to think of situations where you have demonstrated the capabilities needed for the vacancy.

Think about your work ‘style’:

  • How do you behave when working with other people?
  • How do you manage people and projects?
  • How do you cope with difficult situations?

Be ready to talk about both your strengths and areas where you think you need some development.

Think about how you would go about tackling tasks with limited preparation time.

The baseline personnel security standard

Like all government departments, DFID must ensure that everyone it employs complies with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard before they take up their post. This means verifying applicants’ identity; nationality and immigration status, employment history over the past three years and criminal record.

You will need to download and complete the Baseline Personnel Security Standard form and bring it with you to the assessment centre.

Special requirements

We want all candidates to have the opportunity to perform to the best of their abilities. If you have any special requirements, language issues, medical conditions or disabilities that could potentially impact on your performance on the day, please download and complete the Reasonable Adjustments form and send it to us straight away so that we can do everything possible to accommodate your requirements. If you prefer, you can arrange for someone to talk to us about your needs on your behalf.
