Assessment centres

Following the paper sift of application forms, shortlisted candidates may be invited to attend an assessment centre. Assessment centres are designed to ensure that DFID recruits people with the right mix of competencies and skills. They also enable DFID to gather information about candidates in a way that is fair to all and supports our diversity agenda.

A typical assessment centre will include three or more of the following:

  • panel interview
  • core competency-based interview
  • written exercise
  • group discussion
  • presentation to the interview panel, and
  • psychometric tests (these may also be completed online in advance).

The assessment centre will give all candidates multiple opportunities to demonstrate their skills and competencies. All the information gathered will be considered, and all decisions made according to the advertised criteria.

Most jobs require candidates to demonstrate five of DFID’s nine core competencies. The list of core competencies provides a brief explanation of all nine. The competency framework and the core competency framework for advisers set out the skills and attributes that make up each competence.
