1. What qualifications do I need?
You will need to have gained a degree at 2.1 (or equivalent) or above or be graduating in 2013 with a predicted result at 2.1 or above.
We are happy to consider any degree subject as well as candidates with further qualifications.
2. What degree subjects should I have studied? Do I require relevant work experience?
We are happy to receive applications from any degree discipline. You do not require a degree in an International Development or International Relations related subject, except for our IT graduate development placements where a degree in IT/Computer Sciences is required. You do not require relevant work or volunteering experience. The graduate scheme aims to provide you with rewarding experience and personal skills development.

15th January 2013 to 6pm (18:00 hours GMT) on 12th March 2013. We cannot accept applications after this time.
If at all possible, please do not leave your application to the last week or last few days prior to the closing date of 12th March 2013.

6. What is the salary?
£22,000 per annum (pro rata)
7. Are there opportunities for overseas work as part of the 50 week placement?
All graduate development scheme placements will be UK based for the 50 week period but opportunities to travel and visit our country offices and development projects may be available depending on your specific role.
8. The programme lasts for 50 weeks. Can I apply for internal DFID jobs during that time?
Yes, you can apply for internal DFID jobs towards the end of your 50 week placement with us. Your application will be subject to the Civil Service employment application rules.
9. Can I also apply to the Civil Service Fast Stream graduate recruitment scheme?
Yes, you can apply to the Civil Service Fast Stream programme at the same time as applying to this scheme or during your placement with us. The applications and programmes are separate and will not have an impact on each other.
10. Can I apply if I graduated a couple of years ago?
As a key element of this scheme is to provide graduates with valuable work experience and personal skills development, it is therefore preferable that you will be a 2012 or 2013 graduate or will be completing a post-graduate qualification in 2013.
11. Can I apply as part of a work placement year or year out?
As an undergraduate or a student on a gap year, you will not be eligible to apply. The graduate development scheme is for those who completed their first or further studies or will be graduating in 2013.
12. What is the recruitment process?
Once we have received your application form and online test result, if you have a pass in the online test, your application will be considered in the next sifting stage of the recruitment process. If your application has been successful at this sifting stage, you will be invited to an assessment centre at our Glasgow (East Kilbride) or London office.
By approximately 3 weeks after the closing date of 12th March 2013, all applicants will be contacted regarding the outcome of their application.
The assessment centre is an opportunity for us to find out more about you. You will be invited as part of a group of applicants and the day will consist of a number of tasks for you to complete individually or participate in as part of a group exercise. These will include an interview, a short presentation and a group discussion exercise.
Assessment centres will take place from mid to late April and in May 2013.
13. If I am successful, when will I start work?
If successful, your placement at DFID will start late August or September 2013. The exact start date will be confirmed in your letter of appointment.
14. Can I defer entry if I am successful?
No. If you already know that you have commitments which will prevent you starting work in September 2013, we advise you to consider waiting and apply again in the future.
15. Can I choose which department I work for?
On your application form in the ‘Personal Statement’ you can indicate a preference for a particular area and location. If invited to an assessment day, you can also mention this on the day. Please note that we cannot guarantee where our placements will be in September 2013 or your choice of department and/or location.
