GTF Number 010

Developing Southern Civil Society advocacy in Water and Sanitation in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Central America

Key Facts

  • Start date: 27 August 2008
  • End date: 30 September 2013
  • Amount of DFID funding £5,000.000

The WaterAid GTF programme aims to increase the capacity and resources of civil society “policy communities” in 16 target countries (across Africa, Asia and central America) to participate in effective evidence-based dialogue with decision-makers in the water and sanitation arena and build pressure to secure pro-poor service delivery.

The programme also aims to increase and improve the allocation of resources for the water and sanitation sector. A series of activities will enable civil society actors to develop local understanding of budgeting processes and increase their advocacy actions for improved sector financing. A focus on promoting the inclusion of marginalized groups in gathering evidence, advocacy and decision-making will also contribute to ensuring that the ‘poorest’ benefit from changes in the sector.

To increase the impact of the strengthened voice of civil society in the water sector, the programme also aims to support national governments and service providers to respond appropriately and to actively engage in local level dialogue with local actors such as local governments and service providers.
