Results Based Financing for Low Carbon Energy Access (RBF)

Project Focus

RBF offers grant payments to businesses which deliver pre-specified outputs within the low carbon off-grid energy sector.

Eligibility to Apply or Access Support

The portfolio of products and services is not yet finalised but will include equipment/appliances e.g. cook stoves, solar lanterns, as well as off-grid infrastructure installations e.g. mini grids.

Businesses need to be capable of supplying the specific product/service, as payment is only after evidence of results achieved and no money is paid up front, although contracts are signed in advance. The grant payment is for only part of the supply costs. Participants must show that they will be able to be financially sustainable in the long run after the intervention and therefore the products/market must be commercially viable.
RBF is looking to operate in between 5-7 of the following countries; Bangladesh, Benin, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Malawi, Mozambique, Peru, Rwanda, Tanzania and/or Vietnam. The final list will be released in 2013.
RBF funding does not provide funding specifically for capacity building or policy activities.

Applicants will need to be registered with the appropriate registration body in the developing country they are operating in.

Application Process

The application process is not yet finalised. The call for business applications is expected to start mid 2013. Country specific applications will be advertised nationally and internationally and on this website and EnDev website.
