Benefits for Business and Workers Model (BBW)

Lead Partner: Impactt Limited
Project Partners: Arcadia, Marks & Spencer, Mothercare, New Look, Sainsbury’s and Tesco

Project Location: Bangladesh, India

Project Description

This project focuses on improving the management systems of ready-made garment manufacturers, demonstrating the business benefits of providing better jobs and providing the tools and know-how to create change.

The project aims to roll out practical tools in garment factories with the aim of:

  • building management skills in production, quality and human resources
  • enabling workers to communicate their views
  • enabling factory managers to understand the needs and aspirations of workers (in particular women, contract workers and migrants)
  • supporting the negotiation of improved packages meeting workers’ stated needs.

The project will involve 80 factories in India and Bangladesh (specific locations to be determined) and expects to achieve positive change for approximately 83,800 workers. Retailer partners have committed to ensuring that factories drawn from their supply chains participate in and jointly fund the project. The project partners foresee that the project will be over-subscribed, since the business case for factory participation is extremely strong and has been deemed as well proven. In any case, retailer partners have committed to underwrite the factories’ share of costs initially.
