The Angolan government has been building up the country’s infrastructure with the aim of providing basic services to the majority of the population. However, achieving any of the Millennium Development Goals will be a major challenge.
MDG 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger54% of the population lives below the international poverty line.
MDG 2: Achieve universal primary educationThere is not enough up-to-date information to assess Angola's progress towards this MDG (or lack of it).
MDG 3: Promote gender equality and empower women30% of seats in Parliament are held by women.
MDG 4: Reduce child mortality An estimated 260 children under the age of 5 die per 1,000 live births. Only Sierra Leone has a worse child mortality rate.
MDG 5: Improve maternal healthFor every 100,000 live births, an estimated 1,400 women die just before, during or just after childbirth. Only Sierra Leone, Niger, Afghanistan and Chad have worse maternal mortality rates.
MDG 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases2% of the population between the ages of 15 and 49 is living with HIV. The incidence of tuberculosis continues to rise, with some 285 people out of every 100,000 having the disease. However, there have been reductions in the TB death rate.
MDG 7: Ensure environmental sustainabilityOnly 51% of the population have access to a source of improved drinking water although this is an increase from 39% in 1990. Only 50% have access to improved sanitation, but this represents good progress from 26% in 1990.
MDG 8: Develop a global partnership for developmentAn element of this MDG is access to communications technology. From 2000 to 2006, the number of people in Angola with a mobile phone subscription rose massively from 0.2 per 100 to 14.33.
