Namibia, a large and sparsely populated country on Africa's south-west coast, enjoyed more than a decade of stability under its founding president Sam Nujoma, who led the long fight against rule by South Africa. Namibia is a lower middle income country (MIC), annual average per capita income of around US$1,800. But with a population of 2.1 million, 62% live on less than $2 a day (49% live below the international poverty line, currently $1.25 a day).
DFID has no bilateral programme in Namibia but the country benefits from the DFID Southern Africa Regional Plan and Civil Society Challenge Fund projects.
