DFID Health Research Competition for the Development of New Technologies to Impact on Diseases of Poverty

DFID’s overall research strategy has three broad aims:

1. To support development of new technologies to have an impact on poverty or the effects of poverty, such as new vaccines, drugs or drought tolerant crops;
2. To find better and more cost-effective ways of delivering aid and development assistance to those who need it;
3. To increase understanding of key development questions to support best policy choices.

This competition for DFID health research funding concerns developing new technologies to impact on diseases of poverty e.g. vaccines, drugs, insecticides, diagnostics, reproductive health commodities, etc.

The competition is open to all areas of work but at the present time areas of particular interest to DFID are:

1. Malaria – drugs – in particular for P. vivax and malaria in pregnancy; diagnostics; insecticides; G6PD test
2. Communicable diseases (e.g. TB/HIV/Diarrhoea/Meningitis/etc) – drugs; diagnostics; vaccines; microbicides
3. Neglected tropical diseases – drugs; diagnostics; insecticides
4. Reproductive, maternal and newborn health – e.g. reproductive health commodities, family planning technologies, dual prevention technologies. G6PD test
5. Other – hunger and humanitarian issues

DFID priority geographic areas are Africa and resource poor areas in Asia.
