The Medical Research Council has now launched a further call to support ‘rising star’ African Research Leaders. This is a prestigious award, jointly funded by the UK MRC and the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID). The aim of the scheme is to strengthen research leadership across sub-Saharan Africa by attracting and retaining exceptionally talented individuals who will lead high quality programmes of research on key global health issues pertinent to the region and beyond.
The scheme is open to talented and enthusiastic African investigators working in all biomedical and health research areas within the MRC/DFID remit on global health. Priority will be given to applications that address the key health problems relevant to national and regional health needs and hence best conducted in sub-Saharan Africa.
Awards provide support for up to five years. The grant package includes a potential contribution to the African Research Leader’s salary (up to 100% in the first years), funds for a programme of research and support for collaborative activities between the African and UK institutions. The African Research Leader will be nominated by a UK based principal investigator as part of the partnership between the African and UK institution. The Translating Research into Action (TRAction) Project supports implementation research to develop, test, and compare approaches to more effectively deliver health interventions, increase utilization, achieve coverage, and scale-up evidence-based interventions for maternal and child health problems. TRAction is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
TRAction is anticipating the release of a Request for Applications (RFA) to support research on the relationship between population density and the impact of water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions on diarrhea and other fecal-associated infections.
Before releasing the RFA for applications, TRAction is asking for program implementers, researchers, and others knowledgeable about the WASH field to provide comments on the RFA. Comments may address other relevant background information or resources that could be included in the RFA, suggestions on research questions or design, application guidelines, or other RFA components that could benefit from a suggested revision.
TRAction will review the comments submitted by 11 March 2013, and anticipates posting a revised RFA to solicit applications on 25 March 2013.
For more information, including the WASH RFA for public comment document, please see the TRAction Project website.
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Government of Norway, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada, and the U.K. Government (Department for International Development) invite global problem solvers to answer their third call for innovative prevention and treatment approaches to dramatically reduce maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths in poor, hard-to-reach communities around the time of childbirth.
Specifically, the Challenge seeks to identify and develop transformative approaches that integrate new science and technology, better service delivery models, and improved "demand side" innovations that empower pregnant women and their families to practice healthy behaviors and be aware of and access health care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the early postnatal period, especially the first two days after birth.
The partners anticipate awarding 25 seed grants and 5 transition-to-scale grants as a result of the request for applications (RFA). Actual number of awards in each category may vary.
For more information download the RFA and visit the Saving Lives at Birth website.
Deadline for applications: 28 March 2013, 2:00 p.m. EST.
