In September 2011, the Deputy Prime Minister announced the Girls' Education Challenge, a programme that will help up to a million of the poorest girls in the world go to school by 2015.
The initiative calls on NGOs, charities and the private sector to find better ways of getting girls into school in the poorest countries in Africa and Asia.
The programme has three funding phases:
- step change projects
- innovative projects
- strategic partnerships
The Step Change projects were selected in January 2013. There are now fifteen new programmes, working in nine countries, which will give 670,000 girls the opportunity to go to receive a good quality, long-term education.
The Innovation and Strategic Partnerships funding windows are now closed and successful programmes will be announced later this year.
