What do the charts and graphs mean?

The charts on country pages in the ‘Where we work’ section of this website are created automatically from data held on DFID’s financial management system.  Data is added to the system continually and updates to the website are released monthly. This data is used to generate these charts which illustrate very simply the information held as it relates to different countries.

Budget by Sector pie chart illustrates the budget allocated to a range of sectors (related activities) carried out in a particular country. The totals include project budgets that are approved (i.e. planned, operational and complete). The sectors reported here are based on DFID's multisectoral approach, which means that up to 8 input sector codes can be allocated to a project component. These figures may differ from other sources such as the DAC reports (Development Assistance Committee) since DAC specify only one sector is reported for each project component.

The Annual Budget/Spend by Year graph is populated with actual figures relating to currently approved or pipeline project budgets from our financial management database. The figures are based on a financial year spanning 6th April - 5th April. The spend indicator shows the total spend by financial year and is uses a resource accounting approach.

The information in these charts and elsewhere on this website may not match other published outputs for a number of reasons, for example:

  • DFID do not publish budgets where a tendering exercise is underway, as this may reveal commercially sensitive information.
  • Pipeline projects and projects which are yet to be developed for coming years may not yet have been added to our database and will not be included in the overall budget shown.  These may be outlined in the DFID Operational Plans.
  • The information reported on this website covers DFID activities only, whereas the data reported to the DAC also includes Official Development Assistance (ODA) from other official UK sources (for example the Foreign & Commonwealth Office).
  • The data reported in Statistics on International Development are based on a 'cash' basis, in line with international reporting practices, whereas the data reported here are on a 'resource' basis (i.e. expenditure is recorded at the time goods and services are consumed rather than when they are brought to book).
  • For more information on what is reported to the DAC please see the DAC statistical reporting directives.
