HIV research short-listed for award

27 January 2010

The DFID-funded Developing Antiretroviral Therapy (DART) trial has been nominated and short-listed for Lancet "Paper of the Year." This prestigious award is given to one of eight short-listed papers which Lancet readers feel most shapes clinical research or practice.

This DART study, funded by the Medical Research Council, DFID and Rockefeller foundation was the largest clinical trial of antiretroviral therapy ever run in Africa. Results showed that regular laboratory tests offer little additional clinical benefit to populations when compared to careful clinical monitoring.

The implications of this are better care and survival rates for people living with HIV and cost savings to people and health services. Findings suggest that antiretroviral treatment can be safely delivered with good quality clinical care in community clinics nearer to peoples’ home. With the money saved by reducing unnecessary laboratory tests, many more people with HIV in Africa could be treated. Most importantly, irrespective of group, the survival rate in this trial was amongst the best in any programme or study in Africa.

Votes are registered through the Lancet website before the closing date of Thursday 11 February. The winner will be announced Saturday 20 February.
