The implications for Global School Partnerships
The UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID) has supported the Global School Partnerships programme since 2003, helping to partner 3,750 UK schools with schools in developing countries and providing grants for reciprocal visits and global curriculum development.
DFID’s current phase of funding for the Global Schools Partnership programme is due to end next year (31 March 2012). As is the case with the full UK aid programme, this area of DFID’s work has been reviewed to ensure it delivers results and represents value for money for the UK taxpayer.
In July this year the Secretary of State for International Development, Andrew Mitchell, stated that DFID’s “excellent work on school linking will continue”. DFID will be making further announcements about the continuation of school linking in due course.
Mr Mitchell believes we have a huge opportunity to share Britain’s skills with communities in the developing world and that forging links between people around the world is a powerful way to build understanding and cooperation.
Britain has a long history of links to developing countries and the Coalition Government wishes to build on these strong foundations to strengthen our communities and achieve development results.
GSP will continue to offer advice and guidance to partnerships for the remainder of its contract.
Schools are advised to refer to British Council Schools Online (previously Global Gateway) in order to get up to date information about new sources of funding.
