Procuring food to UK or equivalent standards

The coalition Government has set out a commitment that central Government will source food, subject to no overall increase in costs, to meet UK or equivalent standards of production. DFID does not procure food directly for catering operations, however under the terms of the staff restaurant contract operated by Charlton House during the period of this report ( April 2010-December 2010 ), Charlton House believed circa 78% of food, by value, was produced to UK production standards.

DFID's two UK office staff restaurants are now operated under contract by Mitie Technical Facilities Management. To ensure this contract reflects the Government's commitment on food standards to UK or equivalent standards, Mitie must take full account and abide by the DEFRA Public Sector Food Procurement Initiatives (PSFPI).
