Michael Anderson

Biography

Michael Anderson was Director General for Policy and Global Issues at the Department for International Development (DFID) between April 2010 and September 2013.

Prior to being appointed to this role Michael has help a number of positions within DFID including:

  • Head of DFID’s programmes in India (2008-10)

  • Head of DFID’s programmes the Middle East

  • Head of DFID’s programmes North Africa and Iraq (2005-8)

  • Head of the DFID policy team on fragile states (2003-5)

  • Head of DFID’s programmes on justice, security, and rule of law (2001-3)

From July 2012 to September 2013 Michael was also the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for the UN Development Goals.

Prior to joining DFID, Michael was Director of Studies at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (1996-2001), an independent think tank. He had an independent consulting practice in international law (1988-2001), and taught law and development studies at SOAS, University of London (1988-1996).

In 2000 he was a founder partner of Bazian Ltd, a company which specialises in information products for evidence-based medicine.
