The Conflict, Humanitarian and Security Department works with DFID divisions, other Whitehall Departments and international partners to tackle humanitarian, conflict, security and justice issues that underpin poverty in some of the most vulnerable communities around the world.

Its goal is to reduce the loss of lives, livelihoods and property, the incidence of refugees, and internal displacement in conflicts and natural disasters.

Recent work has involved helping DFID offices to:

  • manage the impact of floods, earthquakes, hurricanes and conflict in Bangladesh, India, Caribbean, Latin American and Sri Lanka
  • build up the disaster management capacity of national authorities in Southern Africa and Indonesia
  • think through how conflict and insecurity impact on poor people in Pakistan and Yemen
  • design interventions to improve security and help poor people access justice in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria.
