DFID website search – how to find what you’re looking for

There are three types of search on the DFID website – a site search, a research search and a custom search.

Site search

The site search appears on the top right of every page on the site:

This search works like Google and will bring up a list of all types of material on the DFID website when you type in some key words. Generally, all the words you put in the query will be used.

Research search

This provides various search tools (simple search, advanced search, and browsing by region, country or subject) to help you find information about research funded by DFID. It includes the Research for Development (R4D) database and external websites.

Custom search

This is intended to help you find the following types of information:
news stories, press releases, speeches, case studies, articles,  publications and videos.

You can find it on pages in the News and Stories sections of the site:

You can type key words into the search text box, and pick a theme and/or a country from the menus (or you can combine key words with menus choices). The more accurate your key words, the more likely you are to find what you are looking for. Unfortunately this also means that if you get the punctuation wrong, the content won't be found. In your search results, the date shown is the date the material was published on the website.

In the Publications section of What We Do, a menu for 'publication type' is also available to narrow down your search results:

Using the DFID website archive

If you cannot find material on our website that you know we used to publish, you may find it useful to visit the archived version of the DFID website. The European Archive has monthly snapshots of the entire DFID website from 1999 onwards.  You can choose a month and year to visit a working version of the DFID site as it appeared then. Please note that the search will not work in these old versions of the site – you need to navigate using the menus.
